What promotion means
When your pawn reaches the last rank, it must promote. A white pawn promotes on the eighth rank. A black pawn promotes on the first rank.
The pawn can become a queen, rook, bishop, or knight. It cannot stay a pawn, and it cannot become a king.
Which piece should you choose?
- A queen is usually best because it is the most powerful piece.
- A knight can be best if it gives check or creates a tactic the queen cannot.
- A rook or bishop is rare, but sometimes useful to avoid stalemate.
Why promotion matters
Promotion is why passed pawns are dangerous. Even a single pawn can become decisive if it cannot be stopped before reaching the end of the board.
Quick test
When a pawn is close to promotion, count how many moves it needs and whether the opponent's king or pieces can stop it in time.
